DIY Nontoxic Hair Gel

When we arrived to North Africa, I realized the options for low tox hair and skin care was basically nonexistent or super hard to find. As a result, I began experimenting with recipes for low tox hair care and skin care!

One I have really been loving lately is gelatin hair gel. It is super easy and makes my hair bouncy and shiny.

What you will need:

1/2 tsp of gelatin

1 cup of filtered water

1/4 cup of the essence of your favorite herbs or oils. I used saffron in mine because we have an abundance of it here (but I know it can be hard to find in the states). Rosemary may be another option. When I am in America, I order herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Directions:

Pour your water in a pan and then sprinkle your gelatin in it. Allow it to bloom. Then bring to a simmer and then turn of the heat and stir until it is dissolved.

Pour into a glass container and let it sit over night (or at least 3-4 hours for it to set).

That’s it!

It should last about 1 week in the fridge.

*Note: Some people have said this can lead to protein overloaded hair. But to me protein overload happens when you use too many protein rich products at once (products with keratin). I personally have been using this once a week and my hair feels very soft and shiny. My hair is not your hair, and you are unique so use it with your own discernment!
